ScreenSteps Live API Example: Zendesk Widget
April 30th, 2009 by Greg DeVore
Some of you may be familiar with Zendesk, a popular help desk application. Zendesk has this great feature that allows you to create custom widgets in your sidebar. With just a little bit of work we were able to create a ScreenSteps Live widget that allows us to search all of our content on ScreenSteps Live. That way we can quickly copy the url for a lesson and paste it right into a response to our customers.
Watch the video below so see an example:
You can get the code for the widget and instructions on how to configure the widget here: ScreenStep Live Zendesk Widget Example

Ah, that’s quite handy. Off to get the widget ;-)

The widget only seems to work in agent mode. When logged in as a user, I can’t get it to work.

Yes Michael. It is a bug in Zendesk where the javascript that the widget relies on isn’t getting included for non-agents. We have notified them about it and they informed us that they are pushing out a fix this Saturday.

Do you have a plug-in for Typepad? Typepad has a feature TypeList which accepts HTML code or Javascript to be inserted on sidebar of a blog.

Carlos- We don’t have a TypePad plug-in but you could insert a ScreenSteps Live iFrame which will give you pretty much the same functionality. Here is a lesson on inserting an iframe in Zendesk. Should work pretty similarly for TypePad. Let us know if you need any help.
